Here’s My Definition Of Love — What’s Yours?
Lately, there has been a lot of turmoil in romantic relationships surrounding me.
A very close friend being rejected and having his heart broken.
Friends who have been committed or married for years, thinking of separating.
Arguments and disagreements amongst other couples.
And even some hiccups in my own relationship.
Maybe the planets are aligned to test us all right now, or maybe it’s just some weird coincidence, but it got me thinking about love more deeply.
I’ve always believed that heartbreak is the most difficult thing a person can go through. There is truly no running away from it and it can be so all-consuming that you’re unable to focus on anything else. It can also manifest in awful physical symptoms, which I have felt firsthand.
I decided to ask myself, what does love even mean? Why does love feel different with a romantic partner than it does with a friend? A plant? An animal?
And most curiously — Why do people define love so differently, and yet we all want it?
My definition here defines love in reference to partnerships. My definition of love, in general, would be different, however in reference to intimate relationships.
