Mental Health Epidemic: Therapy & Medication is Making it Worse.
In my opinion yes — we’re taking the wrong approach — here’s why…
I was first diagnosed with anxiety and depression when I was 15 years old, after a series of panic attacks led me to counselors, psychologists and psychiatrists.
As I began to understand my mental health ‘struggles’, I became increasingly interested in researching it myself. So I ended up studying psychology in college, with the goal of eventually becoming a psychologist.
However, halfway through my degree, I started to question what I was learning and really started to question my career choice — eventually leading me to switch majors.
Why was it that when researchers did double blind studies of drugs, and the placebo group performed better than the drug group, and had no symptoms — they called it a failure, and focussed on bettering the drug, rather than understanding why the placebo group so well?
Why was it that they didn’t work on empowering people to heal rather than using a pill, that affected their physical health?
