Sleeping with earplugs has ruined my life

If you are considering starting to use them, don’t. If you’re able to quit, do it now.

This might sound like an exaggeration, but it’s not.

You might also be thinking — Can’t you just stop using them? If it was that easy, I wouldn’t be writing this article.

I started sleeping with earplugs over 20 years ago, as a kid when I was still living at home with my parents. My mom gave me earplugs because I wasn’t able to sleep when it was windy or stormy (and when she was wasted and passed out with the TV blaring but refused to turn it off). Ever since then, I found comfort in the silence that came when those little orange earplugs expanded in my ears and buffered the outside sounds.

I’m in my 30’s now and haven’t been able to sleep without them since. To the extent that if I forget them when I’m on a trip, I will go out at 12 am to buy some from a gas station if I have to (and I have had to, multiple times). It’s usually one of the first things I pack (actually there is already a set of them in my travel bag now, always).

Now — I’m over here making the claim that these little sponges are ruining my life?

100%, yes.
