What Even is Canola Oil — and Should We Consume It?

The good, the bad and the ugly about canola oil.

Seed oils are all the rage these days and I’m lately, I find myself looking more closely at the ingredients in the few pre-prepared things I purchase. I was surprised that the hummus I buy (when I don’t have time to make my own) had canola oil instead of olive oil — why the heck would they use canola oil in hummus!? I thought.

Cost of course.

I started randomly looking at items in the store…canola oil was in almost everything. From muffins to “healthy” granola bars & cereals, oat milk, soups, sauces, ice cream…the list goes on.

If you google it the first thing that comes up is how great it is for you. Canola oil is a “heart-healthy” fat according to all the government websites here in Canada and the States.

That got me thinking — well…if it's so healthy and it's for sure a part of almost everyone’s diets because it's in nearly everything — why is heart disease increasing?

I mean, of course, there are other factors that cause heart disease, but the whole point of pushing people to consume canola oil was for health purposes according to the government sites…and it ain’t working!

I like to do my own research, and look at both sides of every argument, so let's start with the first question.

What is canola oil?
